Good Wife Writer "sonLeonard" Plays Good Samaritan at TV Forum (Vancouver Sun)

September 23, 2012

Leonard Dick was a ‘vice-president of Excel spreadsheets’ when he quit his job to pursue writing.

Photo by Meredith Averill at "The Good Wife" offices

I have mentioned sonLeonard here from time to time. I coined that name to avoid any confusion if I were to just write  "Leonard".

Actually, I rarely refer to Leonard Cohen as  "Leonard" in my posts here, on the Forum or on Facebook.  I tend to use LC. And before you ask...No, I did not name my son after Leonard Cohen.

btw. when sending emails to me, sonLeonard often signs them, "the other Leonard".

The following article featuring sonLeonard is from the Vancouver Sun and was sent to me by Leslie PY.  Thank you Leslie.

Good Wife writer Leonard Dick plays Good Samaritan at forum

Toronto-born writer hopes to guide up-and-comers on how to break into writing for TV and film

By Mark leiren-Young, Special to The Sun September 20, 2012

The Premise and the Hook
Where: Vancity Theatre at the Vancouver International Film Centre
When: Friday, Sept. 28, 2:15 p.m.
Tickets: tickets.viff.org

Leonard Dick used to be the aspiring writer who watched the panels of media professionals being presented at events like the Vancouver Film Festival Forum. But today, the veteran TV writer who has worked on Lost, House, The Mentalist and, now, The Good Wife is a scriptwriting star who would-be writers and industry professionals are happy to stand in line to see.

“I used to eat up these kinds of panels when I was starting out,” the Toronto-born TV writer told The Sun in a phone interview from his home in Los Angeles. “I used to glean nuggets of wisdom from people I’ve heard over the years, and I found them inspiring.”

Dick is on a panel for the Forum’s TV Day titled “The Premise and the Hook” alongside Tim Schlattmann, the executive producer of Dexter, and Angus Fraser, whose writing credits include Combat Hospital. The forum is organized by acclaimed short filmmaker Kellie Ann Benz.

The four-day event — which also covers film, factual programming, global trends and advice for new filmmakers — features approximately 100 guest speakers, including Jane Epenson (writer for Once Upon a Time, Battlestar Galactica and every cool show ever created by Joss Whedon), Simon Barry (creator of Continuum), Rhett Reese (writer of Zombieland), Glenn Berger (writer of Kung Fu Panda), Deepa Mehta (who directed the festival’s gala premier, Midnight’s Children) and Corner Gas creator Brent Butt.

Dick took the long road to Hollywood, starting in Toronto and arriving at Harvard, where he received his MBA in 1990, which landed him a typical entertainment industry job — working on Wall Street. Then he landed a gig as a summer intern at Cineplex Odeon during the golden years of Garth Drabinsky, just as the gold ran dry.

“If Cineplex Odeon hadn’t run into trouble, I probably would have been back in Toronto.”

Dick wanted to work in the entertainment industry doing something creative, so he moved to Los Angeles to take a job with Disney — as a finance executive.

“I just needed a foot in the door and that was my version of waiting on tables, or being an assistant. I was fortunate enough to have an MBA and a business background,” says Dick. “I was the vice-president of Excel spreadsheets.”

While he was excelling with spreadsheets, Dick took a sitcom writing class at UCLA.

“I wrote a spec sitcom script (a sample of The Wonder Years) and I had my epiphany. I said, ‘I think I want to do this when I grow up,’” said Dick.

“I was dating this woman who grew up here, and went to Beverly High. (Her) parents were in entertainment. It wasn’t a big deal to her. So she said, ‘Just do it!’ And I said, ‘You don’t understand — middle-class people in Toronto, we don’t do this kind of thing.’

“With her encouragement, within the course of one week, I resigned from my job at Disney, I proposed to her, and now she’s been my wife of 19 years.”

Although The Good Wife has made a few jokes about Canada and Canadians, Dick says none were his.

“My favourite line I’ve ever written was in an episode of The Good Wife last year and it made it into the directors cut, but it didn’t make the final cut.” It was in an episode Dick wrote about head injuries in a fictionalized version of the NHL. “One of the show’s lead lawyers asks a rival whether he’s trying to organize a class-action suit, and the lawyer’s response is, ‘Yep, seven players.’ That line was in the show. The line after that that got cut was, ‘Eight, if I can find Flin Flon, Man. on a map.’”

Dick says it was a treat just to hear Fred Thompson (the actor, former U.S. senator and failed presidential candidate) say the line. “I’m still a diehard Canadian and proud of it,” says Dick.

And that’s the other reason he’s so pleased to be part of the VIFF program. “Any opportunity to come home, especially to celebrate arts and media in my own country, it’s a pleasure and it’s an honour.

“This (VIFF) program looks like a fantastic program across the board, so I’m going to be as much an eager participant and festival-goer as I am a panelist,” says Dick.

“I’m hoping maybe three words I say might help guide a young writer who doesn’t know how to navigate his or her way. That’s the hardest thing — how do you go from a standing start and break into an industry which can seem scary and inaccessible. The good news is, it is accessible. So I’m hoping maybe something I say sticks with somebody — certainly my kids don’t listen to me.”

Today is the Second Blogiversary of Arlene's Leonard Cohen Scrapbook - July 19, 2012

July 19, 2012

This is a brief post to note the Second Blogiversary of Arlene's Leonard Cohen Scrapbook.

I had been drafting a longer post with my observations and thoughts about the past two LC Scrapbook years, which have meant so much to me. However, my time was hijacked along with the contents of my wallet which unfortunately was stolen yesterday afternoon.  So many things to do...

There is always time though, to thank everyone for the many ways you have supported the Leonard Cohen Scrapbook.

It has been a very special two years and I am very grateful to all of you.

Sincerely,
---Arlene

UPDATE:  Thank you to everyone for your kind wishes below and by email and on Facebook. And thank you to Allan Showalter of 1heckofaguy.com for your Happy Blogiversary Widget.

Leonard Cohen Graciously Poses With Happy Fan Outside El Pollo Loco Restaurant, Los Angeles, Nov 5, 2011

November 17, 2011

This great tweet and twitpic was recently spotted on Twitter by a friend.
Me and LEONARD COHEN!!!!!! Outside of El Pollo Loco. Whoa
Leonard is wearing a wool/felt fedora again. Well, it has been a bit chilly lately, even here in Los Angeles.

And Leonard is also wearing two jackets again.  This time, the inside zippered windbreaker is a patterned fabric.  I don't recall seeing photos of Leonard Cohen wearing patterned attire very often.

Another double jacket style from an earlier LA sighting was posted here.

There was no indication by the tweet whether LC actually ate in the restaurant.

Leonard Cohen Free Legal Sony Music MP3 Download From Los Angeles Public Library

Screen capture:  Los Angeles Public Library website

From August 22, 2011  leonardcohenforum

Imagine my delight, when I logged onto the Los Angeles Public Library website and read the announcement about free legal MP3 downloads for library card holders. (Limit of three track downloads per week.) This is all thanks to Sony Music.

When I hit the link, I was astounded to immediately see a slideshow flashing by which included the familiar iconic Leonard Cohen album cover from "Songs From The Road".

Yippee. Leonard Cohen is so mainstream now.

So I checked out the Leonard Cohen link and found twenty Leonard Cohen albums.
Amusing to see the various genre categories assigned to each of his albums.

Here are a few examples:
  • Songs From The Road - ROCK
  • Live At The Isle of Wight - POP
  • Live in London - FOLK
  • Pop and Rock for the rest of his albums

Included in the available albums are:
  • Anjani - Blue Alert, JAZZ
  • Adam Cohen - Adam Cohen, ROCK
  • NEeMA - Watching You Think, POP

I am presuming because this is "free' and "legal" that YouTube will not threaten us with copyright infringement if we use one of these for background music on a video.

The LAPL press release is below. There are several other cities participating (which I highlighted).

L.A. City and County Libraries Partner to Offer Free Music Downloads
“Freegal” Allows Library Cardholders to Download
Sony MP3 Music Free From Library Websites Starting July 1

Los Angeles (June 28, 2011) — Two of the country’s premier public library systems
that together serve 8 million residents, the Los Angeles Public Library and the Los
Angeles County Public Library, have joined Library Ideas’ network of public library
websites that offer access to hundreds of thousands of songs from Sony Music’s
catalog of legendary artists.

The service, “Freegal” (“free” and “legal”), will be available starting July 1, 2011,
on both library websites. Freegal allows registered card holders of either library to
download up to three selections of Sony Music tracks in the MP3 format each week at
no direct cost. The artists and the works available through the service are listed at
http://www.sonymusic.com.

“The Los Angeles Public Library is pleased to partner with the Los Angeles
County Public Library to enhance our digital services and offer an easy-to-use music
download service that delivers great music to a variety of devices,” said City Librarian
Martín Gómez. “Together, we are able to utilize Freegal to help meet the soaring
demand in Los Angeles for digital-format information and entertainment.”

“The County Library has been waiting a long time for a service like this that
delivers good music, compatibility with lots of devices and simplicity of use. We think this
will be very popular with our customers,” said County Librarian Margaret Donnellan Todd.

“Music is an art form like literature and cinema. With Sony Music’s incredibly
expansive and popular catalog, this becomes a very important product for libraries,”
said Brian Downing, co-founder of Library Ideas. “A library is a focal point of the
community that requires many tools to excite people about library resources. More than
anything, that is the reason for the service.”

Other libraries participating in the Freegal music service include the Princeton
Public Library (NJ), Maricopa County Library District (AZ), Orange County Public Library
(FL), Nashville Public Library (TN) and Fairfield Public Library (CT).

Jeff Bridges' grizzled vocals evoke "Leonard Cohen if he was born a cowboy instead of a Canadian Buddhist folkie"

LA Times: Blue Note

Once again I was surprised and delighted to read another reference to Leonard Cohen in the prestigious Los Angeles Times.  At first reading,  I didn't quite understand what the Jeff Bridges album reviewer was trying to say. After a friend explained it to linear me, I actually found the Leonard Cohen voice comparison a hoot.

To simplify the complicated sentence for others like myself, I highlighted the Leonard Cohen bits in red.

Album review: Jeff Bridges' 'Jeff Bridges'

All too often, a record from a famous actor can inspire cynicism in a music critic, a knee-jerk post-traumatic reaction from too many grisly attempts (anyone remember “Mr. T’s Commandments”?). Thankfully, the second album from noted thespian Jeff Bridges transcends expectations. Then again, if anyone would, it’s him: from playing a jazz pianist in 1989’s “The Fabulous Baker Boys” to his Academy Award-winning turn as a country singer in 2009’s “Crazy Heart,” Bridges has consistently portrayed musicians with wizened authenticity.
This effort appears to have evolved directly out of Bridges’ “Crazy Heart” triumph. For one, it’s produced by Grammy-bedecked studio guru T-Bone Burnett and features contributions from the likes of Greg Brown and Ryan Bingham, all of whom helped guide the “Crazy Heart” soundtrack, also produced by Burnett, toward credibility (and Oscar recognition). Unsurprisingly, Bridges proffers eccentric, rootsy Americana, from the Byrdsian guitar chime hot-wired with Buddy Holly melodies on “What a Little Bit of Love Can Do” through the pedal-steel driven, clip-clopping frontier ballad, “Everything but Love.” Most appealing are Bridges’ grizzled vocals: the sonic equivalent of gray whiskers, they evoke Nick Cave if he were, say, a baby-boomer Hollywood star baked by the Southern California sun (and other things), or Leonard Cohen if he was born a cowboy instead of a Canadian Buddhist folkie.

Bridges’ frayed charisma fits these songs perfectly. Nostalgic yet out of time, welcoming but secretly brooding, the combination creates an audio correlative to the beloved characters he’s played on-screen.

In fleshing out Bad's background, it was decided that his influences should extend beyond the country genre... and that he should have an eclectic taste in music. "T Bone made a wonderful graph for me of the music that Bad might have listened to," Bridges says. "Leonard Cohen was one of the guys we thought of...

Leonard Cohen Scrapbook First Year Anniversary Featured by Dr Allan Showalter on 1HeckOfAGuy.com

The classic Paris Notre Dame Thinker "grotesque" is emulated by the modern Durham wordsmith "grotesque", Dr HGuy

July 20, 2011

Following are a couple of nice bits written by Dr Allan Showalter, Leonard Cohen supreme blogger and Chocolate Martini aficionado, on 1 Heck Of A Guy

They Grow Up So Fast
Yep, only a year ago, the Heck Of A Guy headline was Arlene’s Leonard Cohen Scrapbook Goes Online. As any blogger can tell you, going online may require a modicum of chutzpah but posting steadily for a year is a test of determination, devotion, and dedication.
. . .

The Best Of Arlene
The posts comprising The Best Of Arlene’s Leonard Cohen Scrapbook should, I suppose, be those featuring Arlene’s reviews and videos of performances of Leonard Cohen and the musicians associated with him, such as Adam Cohen, the Webb Sisters, NEeMA, and others or perhaps her documentation of the Friends of Leonard Cohen meet-ups or some similarly momentous entries.

My highest admiration, however, is reserved for those posts which demonstrate that Arlene Dick is not only a fine reporter but an incredibly astute and pithy blogger. Check out this shining example I’ve adapted (i.e., stolen) from Magical Moment — Leonard Cohen, Philip Glass “Book of Longing Q&A ” , a June 2011 post Arlene developed from a rather unpromising video sequence of Leonard Cohen and Philip Glass answering questions from the audience.

Audience Member:  Would you swap longing for… fulfillment?
Leonard Cohen:  What’s fulfillment got to offer?
Damn, I wish I had posted that.

That last line was my favourite bit.

Arlene's Leonard Cohen Scrapbook -- First Year Anniversary Today -- July 19, 2011

Today happens to be the first year anniversary of Arlene's Leonard Cohen Scrapbook.  And there is an interesting connection with the Nashville post immediately below this one.

I recently found an email that I wrote the day after returning home from the San Jose concert (Nov 13, 2009) and totally forgot about.

Part of it was about Leonard Cohen's Nashville concert on November 5, 2009, which I posted below.

The Nashville concert was the main impetus for starting my Leonard Cohen Scrapbook.
I was having trouble finding my own Nashville posts on the Leonard Cohen Forum because there were so many Nashville threads.

I felt I needed to collect all my own posts in one place for easy access. A Scrapbook blog seemed like a good idea.

Being a raw newbie, I turned for help to Dr HGuy aka Allan Showalter, überblogger of http://1heckofaguy.com/

I am grateful for his expert technical guidance, enduring patience and his many helpful suggestions (some of which were a tad racy...well he is wicked and warped.)

Beshert, destiny, that I found this particular email and wrote the Nashville report and posted it on the Leonard Cohen Forum today, July 19, 2011, the LC Scrapbook's first anniversary.

Afterword
I sent an email to the blogger to "yell" at him. Here is his response.
Hi Arlene,
Oh dear, you mustn't like me at all! :)
That's a great blog you've put together, and I see that you've met with the man himself a few times. Nice to see those photos.
I know, I am considered a real Philistine for not appreciating Leonard Cohen's music. It all dates back to my school years back in Ireland. When I was a teenager I'd head to small parties and gatherings, and inevitably some "guitar hero" would pull out his instrument and put a damper on the evening with a woeful rendition of "Suzanne". So, it's probably not Leonard Cohen that turns me off, and more the memory of acne-faced Dublin students doing terrible Cohen impersonations!

Thanks for the email, Arlene. Nice to meet you :)

Take care,

Bill

Granddaughter Enquires About Leonard Cohen Relatives

From July 5, 2010  leonardcohenforum.com

I received a note from my 10 year old granddaughter when she was at summer camp in Canada and I can't stop laughing.  Here it is, exactly as she wrote it (with names omitted).

I think she is destined to always look for relatives of Leonard Cohen with the surname of "Cohen".
Hi Bubbie, camp's a blast! I miss you (and not Leonard Cohen).
My counslers are great and my best friend xxx Cohen's in my cabin (no relation).
Can't wait to see you again.

Stripping The Gears In Denmark

Hans Christian Andersen Museum, Odense

My reply to "Amrei" about the Odense concert in August, 2010

From April 17, 2010  leonardcohenforum

Ah, Amrei, would that I could go. But it is not feasible to go to the Odense concert. Not to worry though, a while back I drove through your beautiful country of Denmark and visited the wonderful city of Odense including the fantastic Hans Christian Andersen Museum. We stayed in B&B's the whole trip to avoid the pesky VAT tax. My friend was a better navigator, so I did most of the driving. We rented a gear shift car and that was an adventure in itself. I hadn't driven a gear shift car in many years. I was okay going forward, but kept forgetting the clutch in reverse. That grinding noise was chilling. After a while I only parked in places where I could pull forward.
