Mysterious Final Few Days of Hank Wiliams, "The Last Ride" and Leonard Cohen's Tower of Song

July 1, 2012

A film about the last few days of Hank Williams, The Last Ride "rolled in" to Los Angeles a few days ago. It is being screened for only one week and at only at one location..

Whenever I hear the name Hank Williams, I think of these lyrics in Leonard Cohen's Tower Of Song:
I said to Hank Williams: how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
A hundred floors above me
In the Tower of Song
When I went to the Leonard Cohen concert in Nashville (Nov/09), I visited the County Music Hall of Fame where I was fortunate to view the special limited time exhibit, Family Traditions: The Williams Family Legacy. It was one of the highlights of my first trip to Nashville.

Luckily for me, the Los Angleles cinema showing the film is reasonably close to where I live. So, I was excited to see it at the first show on the first day. Others had the same idea - it was very well attended for an early Friday afternoon.

The Last Ride - Synopisis:
He called himself Luke The Drifter. He pioneered what we know today as country music. At the peak of his career; he was acknowledged to be the greatest singer-songwriter in American history. After a meteoric rise to radio super-stardom in the late 1940's, Hank Williams had made a train wreck of his life. Drugs, alcohol and a hair-triggered temper ended two marriages, ruined a host of friendships and made the tortured genius an untouchable in the music business.

At the end of 1952, Hank Williams gathered what was left of his physical strength to make things right and began the long road back. On his way to a couple of New Year's shows in West Virginia and Ohio, he hired a local kid who didn't even own a radio, much less know who this legend was, to drive him to the gigs form Montgomery, AL.

Hank Williams never got there. Somewhere on that last highway, the country music legend passed away on New Years Day, in 1953, in the back of his powder blue Cadillac, carrying only his guitar and a notebook full of unfinished songs. He was 29.

Inspired by the mysterious final days of Hank Williams' life, THE LAST RIDE is the story of that final drive through the bleak Appalachian countryside of 1950's America.

The media reviews have been varied.  Here are two: one by the snooty LA Times and one by NPR which I consider balanced.
  • Hank Williams' 'Last Ride' goes nowhere (LA Times)  here
  • Hank Williams Takes A Back Seat In 'The Last Ride' (NPR)  here

Here is my report as a cinema goer

First off, yes, "Hank Williams" coughed throughout the film.

Overall, I was disappointed with the movie for the lack of dramatic story telling.  I found the acting bland - probably because of the shallow script. The sparse story is well known and nothing was added to spark one's interest.

Hank Williams' 1952 Baby Blue Cadillac in which he took his final journey

To me, the powder blue Cadillac was the star of the movie.  It certainly dominated the screen especially against the desolate background of the countryside through which it traveled.

One dramatic device I found interesting - not once during the film was the name "Hank Williams" ever spoken. I suppose this was in keeping with one of the themes of this car trip - the driver never knew the real identity of his passenger.

Had I not watched an hour long pre-release Q&A on the film's official website, I would not have known how this could be possible.

In fact, I learned many interesting things from this Q&A, which included panelist Jett Williams, who was born 6 days after her father died.  I highly recommend watching it, especially if you intend to see the movie.

To watch the Q&A - open the film's official website  here  and on the right frame, choose BEHIND THE MOVIE

The other star of the film is the soundtrack - fantastic.

The soundtrack greatly enhanced the otherwise dull movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  And lucky for us, the entire soundtrack of The Last Ride is accessible online at Curb records, Facebook.

In LA, the film was shown at the Laemmle NoHo 7, North Hollywood.

One of the producers in the Q&A mentioned they were "rolling out" the film one city at a time which was how it was done back in the 50's. Hence my reference in quotes at the top.

For other cities where this film is scheduled, check out the official movie site - on the right frame there is a link for THEATER LISTINGS.

Hunger Games Singer + Leonard Cohen Song = Shared Delight

This is for my granddaughter, Julia who is an avid reader and huge fan of Suzanne Collins (Scholastic) trilogy Hunger Games.

Julia has read the series several times and loves the Hunger Games movie which was released last March/12.

In fact, she was at the premiere opening in Los Angeles where she was thrilled to meet some of the principles in the movie.

Since then, I think you can count on two hands, how often Julia has seen the movie again at the local Arclight Cinema.

The Passing Through refrain was how we Leonard Cohen passionate "friends" serenaded him after the intermission at his last concert of the World Tour in Las Vegas, Dec 11/10. Albert Noonan captured this magical moment so beautifully (click here)
Passing through, passing through.
Sometimes happy, sometimes blue,
glad that I ran into you.
Tell the people that you saw me passing through.
Ah, I love when my granddaughter's passion intersects with Bubbie's passion.

"Excuse me. I Think I Saw You At The Leonard Cohen Concert In Las Vegas At The Colosseum"

Meet KEN.  My favourite guy in Sherman Oaks, CA

January 25, 2012

I once read Dr Heck's lament about posting on his blog (based on Leonard Cohen's quip about composing songs).
If I knew where good posts come from, I would go there more often.
Allan, try hanging out at your local supermarket.

I was shopping at my local supermarket today in Sherman Oaks where another shopper stopped me and said:
"Excuse me. I Think I Saw You At The Leonard Cohen Concert In Las Vegas At The Colosseum"
Oh, did we meet?
No. I just remember seeing you there.
I was so excited.  This is only the second time since moving to Los Angeles three years ago that I've met somebody who actually is familar with Leonard Cohen.

His name is "Ken" and hails from South Africa.  He has been a fan of Leonard Cohen dating back to 1967 when he first read a review of  Songs Of Leonard Cohen.  The reviewer was so ecstatic about these being the best songs he had ever heard. So Ken bought the album and has been enthralled with Leonard Cohen ever since.

Fast forward to October, 2011. For his birthday this past October, Ken's wife bought him Leonard Cohen-The Complete Columbia Albums Collection .

We talked about Leonard's new upcoming album, Old Ideas and about Ken listening to some of the songs streaming online.

Ken remarked about SONY's  aggressive campaign for this album being so different from almost no publicity for past albums.  He feels this is indicative of how important Leonard Cohen is now perceived.

Then Ken added ...He will probably go on tour again.

I hope so, Ken.  I hope so.

Hanukkah Candles, Leonard Cohen, & Rafael Bernardo Gayol

December 20, 2011

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah.  While preparing my Menorah (lovingly made years ago by my then young grandchildren) and organizing the Hanukkah candles, my thoughts went back one year ago to the two final concerts of the Leonard Cohen World Tour in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace, Colosseum.

As happened at every concert at the end of "Anthem", Leonard Cohen introduced each band member individually. For a while, Leonard had been doing an elaborate and hilarious intro of Rafael Bernardo Gayol (eg.Oakland here)

At both concerts, on December 10 and 11, Leonard included yet another imaginative description for Rafael, one we had never heard before.

The new description added:
...he converts to Judaism
but is excommunicated for lighting the Hanukkah candles in the wrong direction.
Yes, there is a correct order.  On each of the eight nights of Hanukkah, another candle is added and placed in the Menorah from right to left.  But when the candles are lit, the order is from left to right, starting with the newest candle first.

Cued to start at Leonard Cohen's introduction of Rafael Bernardo Gayol

-----------
  • Hanukkah, the "Fesival of Lights", is not mentioned in Jewish scripture. The story is related in the book of Maccabees.
  • The candle sitting highest is called the "shamus" (sexton) and is kindled first then used to light all the other candles in "the right direction"

Leonard Cohen FRIENDS Gather For Final Five Concerts 2010-Oakland, Portland, Las Vegas

Leonard Cohen Concert Poster, Las Vegas Caesars Palace November 12, 2009

When I traveled to the "final five" concerts of 2009, Leonard Cohen Forum friends were blessed several times with "early entry". Besides the opportunity to meet some of the band members, the merch stands were not very crowded.  Tim, the merch guy, who watched over the merchandise stand for Lorca Cohen, did a great job and was a very friendly chap. (Tim worked directly for BandMerch, not the UHTC.)

When I saw Tim in the Caesars Palace Colosseum, the penultimate concert venue of the "final five" (2009 leg), he urged me to buy the poster above.
"It is a limited run.  When they're gone,  they're gone.  It will be a collector item."

I ran into Tim again a year later, when I traveled to the "final five" concerts of 2010.

Hopefully, I will see him again at ... the next ..."final five"?

Magical Moment -- Leonard Cohen's Poignant Response at Las Vegas Concert 1, Dec 10, 2010

Screen shot: Tower Of Song one handed solo - Las Vegas Concert 1, Dec 10, 2010

From August 2, 2011  leonardcohenforum

After enthusiastic audience cheers and applause for his one handed solo in Tower Of Song, Leonard Cohen responded first with his usual gracious...
You are so very kind
Then he added something I had never heard him say at any of the other World Tour concerts I had attended or in any of  the World Tour videos I had watched on YouTube.

What he said next was very touching, especially so, because the almost three year long World Tour was about to conclude the following night...
You know how to spoil an old man

"How The Hell Do You Know Leonard Cohen?"

July 25, 2011

After being discharged from hospital recently, an arrangement was made for a visiting nurse to come to my apartment.  The first time the nurse arrived,  she stepped into my entry hall, saw my Leonard Cohen wall grouping and in a loud voice....
How the hell do you know Leonard Cohen?

She originally lived in Montreal where she trained as a nurse.  "I left Montreal in the big exodus from Quebec in 1979."

Did you know Leonard Cohen personally? I asked.
Everyone in Montreal knew who Leonard Cohen was.

I get such a thrill every
time I pass by this wall.

Leonard Cohen Las Vegas Concert Reports: Dec 10 & 11 by LisaLCFan

outside the Colosseum, Caesars Palace

When I read Lisa's concert report on the leonardcohenforum, I had tears in my eyes.  She beautifully described everything I felt. I certainly couldn't write a better report.  I just had to keep a copy.  I was reminded by a dear friend that this is a scrapbook and I can paste anything in it I want.  So I would like to reprint a fellow Canadian's report.

CONCERT REPORTS: Las Vegas, Nevada, December 10 & 11, 2010

by LisaLCFan » Tue Dec 14, 2010

I know that I wrote a few words yesterday about the concerts in Las Vegas, because I wanted to try to put into words how I felt. Now that I’ve had another day to let it all sink in, if you all don’t mind, I’d like to say a bit more, and give a few more details as to what stood out for me during those two magical nights.

My feet have yet to touch the ground since seeing Leonard Cohen in Las Vegas! Friday's show was absolutely perfect, the best I have ever seen, truly superb in every way. And then on Saturday, Leonard somehow surpassed even that, giving us the performance of his life. I have never seen him perform with such passion, such intensity, such exuberance, at such an unimaginably high level, throughout each song, each moment. I mean, he is always great beyond words, every concert he most definitely gives his all, but there seemed to be something extra-special in these two performances.

Some major highlights, at least for me, and as I remember them (forgive me if my memory is not 100% accurate, but it was all so thrilling!) from Friday's show are as follows:

"The Future" was electric, Leonard's voice was deep and profound and he growled in just the right places, and moved his body in such a wonderful way, and he even did the "white man dance" with Roscoe this time! It was exciting to watch and to hear this wonderful performance!

"Bird on the Wire" was very poignant, at that point near the end of the song when Leonard and the band go silent just before the last verse, you could have heard a pin drop in the auditorium, there was not a single sound, it was like an empty room, it was almost eerie how totally silent it was for that moment!

"Chelsea Hotel" was so moving and so intense, I think that almost everybody in the place had tears in their eyes, it was magnificent.

Right before "Anthem," Leonard gave a beautiful speech (it can be seen in the gorgeous video by Arlene) in which he thanked all of us faithful followers (so much deeper than fans, as The Man himself said), and that definitely had a lot of us crying! It was touching and beautiful and heartfelt, and I felt immensely privileged to hear Leonard speak such words, and to know that he meant them for me. I only wish that I could have expressed to Leonard my love and appreciation for his work, his efforts, his songs, and his very being, in such an intimate way as he expressed his feelings for us. My cheering and shouts of joy and affection were all that I could offer, and by the smiles that lit up his face throughout both concerts, I think that he got the message!

“Hallelujah” was one of the most intense, moving versions that I have seen, Leonard was completely absorbed in the song, and he took us there with him, it was totally beyond words, and there was a big standing ovation at the end. Incredible!

"First We Take Manhattan" was also a delight, so full of energy and enthusiasm, everyone was on their feet dancing and clapping along! Rapturous joy!

"Famous Blue Raincoat" was stunning, it left me breathless (that happened quite a bit, all the ballads were so intense, I would realise that I had stopped breathing, wanting to be as silent as possible to hear every word and every note).

As for Saturday's show, here’s what struck me most:

Leonard gave us the most incredible "Bird on the Wire" ever, his performance was so passionate, in the silent moment in the song, instead of being silent like the night before, the audience burst into cheers, because it was such a powerful performance, we couldn't wait until the end to show our appreciation! It was sublime!

"Everybody Knows" was absolutely delightful, Leonard was so playful and enthusiastic, he danced and waved his arms and did that "ba-dee-boo" thing slightly off-mic that he has been doing at some of the 2010 shows, and he got a huge standing ovation after that song, everyone was absolutely caught up in the utter joy of Leonard’s performance.

"Waiting for the Miracle" was one of the most electrifying versions of that song that I've heard, and "The Darkness" was also very fabulous. In fact, the whole first set just crackled with energy and passion, you know sometimes the first set is more laid-back, but on Saturday night, Leonard was on fire the whole time!

A bunch of us sang "Passing Through" as Leonard and the women came on stage for the second set, and Leonard sang along for one line, "Tell the people that you saw me passing through!" It was a beautiful moment!

"A Singer Must Die" was so intense, another one of those songs that left me breathless, Leonard’s performance was so passionate and powerful and poignant, he was moving his body with the intensity of it. It was amazing.

In "I'm Your Man," Leonard was cheeky and sexy and the audience went nuts, and I think there was a big standing ovation after that (there were more standing o’s on Saturday than on Friday).

It was also the best "Take This Waltz," just beautiful, and very moving, since, when Leonard did the band intros, it struck me that it would be the last time he did that (for the forseeable future), and that made it quite emotional for me.

"So Long, Marianne" was powerful and joyous, I was flooded with many emotions, crying and singing at the same time, as I think many others were, also!

Of course, every moment was wonderful, every song was perfect (Suzanne, Sisters of Mercy, In My Secret Life, all of them, just beautiful!) but these are what stand out in my mind today.

One great thing about the Las Vegas concerts was that Leonard gave his farewell speech on the Friday night, so that Saturday night could be more upbeat. I didn’t feel sad after Friday's show, since I had Saturday to look forward to, and so I was just very happy, and it was such an incredible performance anyway. And then on Saturday, Leonard gave such a spirited, enthusiastic, happy performance, that I didn't feel sad on that night either, since he ended on such a high note, I couldn't help but feel uplifted by his performance. It was really special and incredible and beautiful, and I’m so glad that I was able to be there.

I also must note that I had a wonderful time talking with many forum members, some of whom I had met before, many of whom I met for the first time. You know who you are, I won’t name names (I remember you all!), but please know that you made the whole experience even more incredible. It was such a pleasure to spend time with you all, sharing our passion for Leonard and our love of life that led us to that curious and un-magical place for the most amazing and magical time. I shall never forget it!

Cheers,
Lisa

Leonard Cohen Dominates Los Angeles Times Arts & Books Section, Sept 26, 2010

Leonard Cohen dominates the Arts section of today's Los Angeles Times, with a huge full page ad for the Las Vegas concerts on page 3 and a smaller corner ad on top of page 1.

Ah, when I saw the front page of the Arts & Books section, I said to myself, "It just doesn't get any better than this".

And then when I saw the full page ad on page 3 (a collectible for me), I thought, aha, the philistines at the Bridge Club will not be able to roll their eyes anymore. Now I can tell them I am doing Honolulu*, Portland and two shows at Caesars in Las Vegas.

* since cancelled. I am now going to Oakland.

Leonard Cohen, Las Vegas, Caesars Palace Colosseum, November 12, 2009

From November 26, 2009  leonard cohen forum

The position of the front row seat made for an excellent view of Neil Larsen and Rosoe Beck. I tried to keep both in the frame while I was shooting because I never had this vantage at other concerts. Because I was so close to the stage and my camera lens could not open wide enough to capture the whole stage, these videos are basically close-ups.

Some highlights that I can remember:
  • First concert appearance by Roscoe, "The Kid Is Back", Beck's new sexy haircut.
  • Being able to watch the talented virtuosity of Neil Larsen at length. What a delight!
  • LC's "shining, impossible belt buckle" (Tennessean)

It was an awesome concert.

Leonard Cohen Las Vegas - Roscoe "The Kid Is Back" Beck and Other Gems

May 16, 2010  leonardcohenforum

In reviewing my camera memory cards, I discovered a treasure trove of five videos of the Las Vegas concert (Nov 12, 2009). One video in particular is a special delight. I don’t know if anyone else has a video in their private stash, but this seems to be the never before seen video capture of an exciting moment, that was not repeated the following night in San Jose.

After completing Anthem at 5:35, Leonard Cohen segues into a set of particularly gracious introductions of his musicians that climax with a special salute at 9:14 to the newly coiffed musical director, Roscoe, THE KID IS BACK, Beck.

I was so fascinated with Roscoe Beck's new handsome haircut that I kept him in the frame of all my Las Vegas videos as much as possible.

BIRD ON THE WIRE
Perhaps another never seen gem, the patter at the beginning. There is a wonderful exchange between LC and the audience.
LC:     We meet in some unlikely places
Aud:    We love you Leonard
LC:     I’m very fond of you also

THE FUTURE
And maybe a third jewel. I cannot find another video of  The Future from Las Vegas on You Tube.

At 4.15, nice white man dancing by LC and an animated Roscoe followed by the Webb Sisters’ finely tuned choreography removing their jackets, hanging them neatly on the mike stand and their perfectly executed cartwheels.
