Small Insert Of Leonard Cohen Coming to Toulon Stands Out On Very Busy Magazine Cover

October 26, 2012
"Tourism Summer 2012 Was A Good Year "
(google translation)

When surfing the internet for reports about the Sept 26 Toulon concert at the Zenith Omega, I found a tweet with a link to the Sept 3rd issue of  TELEX (Var).  The image packed cover of  this regional events magazine contained a very small photo of Leonard Cohen with page number to a pre-concert article. There has been very little reported about the Toulon concert, so I was delighted to see LC's photo there.

The Var is a region in southeast France. Toulon is the largest city, whose harbour is the main port of the French Navy, and is administrative capital of the Var.

exceptional enough to not

Should we speak of resurrection... of apogee...of immortality? Talk about this poet-singerCanadian at any rate deserves a book to him alone, and also plenty of initiatives have  No about it. We will however remain in the sobriety of a simple announcement, the name is enough in itself to attract crowds of its true for the first hour and admirers... Because obviously, if one like Cohen, it is for the life! Of our lives, soon octogenarian artist (78 years) lived in, because, before singer-musician, Leonard is primarily a poet, his first collection of poems was published in Montreal in 1956, and his first novel in 1963.

HAPPINESS AND SUFFERING
By putting its texts in the service of its influences folk-pop-rock, Leonard Cohen has mostly anchored the musical world of her voice hoarse, serious, with this outretombe something that you fact the flesh of chicken and you pulled your modest tears... No doubt as the tortured character plays for many in the emotion felt the themes redundant that punctuate the work of Cohen: religion, but especially the solitude, the inner suffering, depression... A State chronic depressive it will even up to discuss openly with journalists then of the press conference for the release of her "Old Ideas" album (released in January) (2012) Is in any case said album that we offer the privilege to host the legend alive and well in our French Lair of the Zenith. Leonard Cohen will pay an international tour certainly, but does stop in France as for four concerts including three in Paris! That is to say if the event will make date to Toulon, this Wednesday, September 26. True to his reputation, It will however pay the high price, between 62 and €128! There are still places available then it's time to succumb to the old adage: when you love it does not count!

Leonard Cohen FRIENDS On The Go (1 & 2)

October 22, 2012

"I want to express our gratitude to those, I don't want to call them fans,
they are of a much deeper order than fans..."

FRIENDS Out and About in Toulon, France
This concert was well worth the inconvenience of sitting on a coach from Verona for eleven hours. We would do it again anytime. (Caren Gutschmidt, Leonard Cohen Forum)

Thank you Hans and Caren for sharing the wonderful photos of your Leonard Cohen European concert travels.

Leonard Cohen FRIEND at a Tailgate Party?

That was my first reaction when I saw this charming photo of a beaming FRIEND proudly displaying a framed autographed photo of Leonard Cohen.  It was on Twitter, included in a continuous ribbon of images which unfortunately did not contain any individual photo info.

Detail

Let's see if there are any clues:
  • The vehicle is a right hand drive. So, the photo location was not North America.
  • It looks like a very happy occasion, for at least two people. I see what looks like a bottle of bubbly and two fluted champagne glasses in the vehicle. One glass still has a small amount of bubbly.
  • The photo was shot by someone using a tripod. (see the reflection in the detail)
  • There is second blonde woman in the glass reflection.
Not a lot of clues to tell us much, I agree.

To me, this doesn't look like an incidental Leonard Cohen moment. It looks staged with a photographer using a tripod to snap the photo.

Regardless of the lack of info, I still enjoy this photo.

This lady looks like a very happy Leonard Cohen FRIEND on the go...in style.

Deja Vu "There is a second portion" Leonard Cohen Barcelona Concert, Palau Sant Jordi, 10.3.12

October 4, 2012
Leonard Cohen, en su concierto en Barcelona, junto al guitarrista Xavier Mas (Àlex Garcia)

Aw, it was kind of sweet that twice on the tour the audience thought the show was over following "Anthem" and then received the good news that there will be a second portion of the show.

The first time this happened was in Toulon on September 26. And the second time was at the Barcelona concert on October 3.

There are nice descriptions of these two incidents recorded by Joey Carenza, webmaster  Notes From The Road and Leif Bodnarchuk, backline technician blogger, No Ideas.

From NFTR Barcelona (J.S. Carenza III):
Thankfully…

The Barcelona crowd, exhilarated and joyous, thought the show was over at the break. Thankfully Barcelona native Javier Mas jumped on LC’s mic to present the patrons with the good news. Speaking of which, let’s go for the second portion of the show.

From No Ideas (Leif Bodnarchuk)
...Leonard didn’t tell the audience that the show would continue in a short while, as he usually does; the crowd thinks it’s all over!

At the end of the first set, after Leonard skips off stage, the audience roar in appreciation. Normally the band, left behind to play Leonard off at this time every night, do not get such a rousing cheer. But tonight — ah wait a minute — Leonard didn’t tell the audience that the show would continue in a short while, as he usually does; the crowd thinks it’s all over! (Would that it was, I could easily pack up and get out of here, my feet are sore.) After some moments of funny looks between ourselves, coupled with a few jokes (They think it’s all over; it is now!) a man appears on stage, saying something in French (how strange) and the audience laughs, presumably knowing their calls for an encore were unnecessary.

Greetings From Camp Cohen - G'Mar Tov

September 25, 2012

G'mar Tov

This photo of the sun setting in Toulon, France, the next stop on Leonard Cohen's Old Ideas World Tour, captures the essence of the solemnity of Yom Kippur which begins tonight at sundown and extends until sunset tomorrow.

G'mar Tov is a common blessing or greeting before Yom Kippur. It's literal meaning is "finish good."
It is said, "On Rosh Hashana, it is written.  On Yom Kippur, it is sealed." Thus, the traditional Yom Kippur salutation is "G'mar Tov" (finish well) or "G'mar Chatima Tova" (may you be sealed in the book of life).
And what is "written on Rosh Hashana" forms the basis for Leonard Cohen's masterpiece, "Who By Fire".

For more background, please see my earlier post,  Leonard Cohen's Who By Fire and the Unetanah Tokef Prayer in High Holiday Services, 5772

Thanks go to Camp Cohen, Notes From The Road webmaster Joey Carenza (J.S. Carenza III)  for this very moving photo and greeting.
