Exclusive Blog: Adam Cohen Is a Chip Off the Old Songwriting Block
The Comet blogger and industry exec Jonathan McHugh takes us to a special lunchtime set at the famed “Hotel Cafe” in Los Angeles where Adam Cohen showed off his songwriting chops and even got some help from dad.
Singer/songwriter Adam Cohen took the stage the afternoon of April 6 at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles and proved he has way more than the same last name of his iconic father, Leonard. Adam posses a true star charisma and a very fluid stage presence, but his storytelling and song writing chops make him a star in his own right. He has been around and sounds a bit burnt on the music biz, but he seems on top of his creative game. Backed up by a cellist and guitar player, he brought a fully rounded sound to the Cafe, which after a decade is still “the"cool spot for singer/songwriters in Los Angeles.
His song “Beautiful,” which he wrote and performed for his four-year-old son and wife, who were in attendance, almost brought me to tears. The song tells his version of what he would do and say if it all where to end tomorrow, armageddon-style. His dad was also in the audience and he lent his son a hand when Adam played the classic Leonard Cohen song “So Long Marianne” for an encore.
Adam could not remember the first chorus and asked his pop for help. When dad said the first lyrics to the second chorus Adam said, “No dad, the first chorus!” His dad obliged.
It was truly an impromptu beautiful musical father and son moment and I was happy that I made it crosstown just in time to catch the short but powerful lunchtime set.
Check out his music and when he tours, make sure you get to see him, as great songwriting and delivery are a beautiful thing to behold.
